His mother died when he was only 12 years old and his father when he was 24. Ian McKellen is gay. His first relationship was with Brian Taylor, a history teacher. The relationship lasted for eight years. In 1978, he met Sean Mathias whom he had a 10 year-long love affair. In 1979, McKellen was appointed the Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 1991, was knighted and made a Companion of Honor.
